My iphone 5 is constantly searching for service

My iphone 5 is constantly showing searching in the top left hand corner

I am unable to make calls or send texts - but the wifi is working

The SIM card works in my ipad so it is not the SIM card - I think it's the handset

Any ideas on ow to fix it ?
