I'm debating between purchasing a time capsule or extreme and external hard drive. I just like the though of having a separate hard drive in case anything goes wrong with the router that I still have access to my data on the hard drive. Thanks in advanced
I think you pretty much answered your own question with your desired goal to have an external drive. However, not to complicate it even more, you can also attach and external hard drive to the Time Capsule as well and use either its internal or external drive for backups, file sharing, or both.
