How do I set up iMessage on my mac so that I can send out iMessages and receive them?

It was working before but now it's not, what is the step to step process to set up the iMessage on a mac? I can't really use my iPhone right now because it's kinda broken. Help?

Sheila, go to the Messages account settings. Sign out of your account, quit Messages. Reopen it then sign back in.
