Downloading music onto phone (not iCloud)

I want to be able to choose to have my music downloaded onto my phone rather than stored on iCloud. I've read about making playlists available offline but that didn't work so well for me... I clicked (more accurately touched) to make a playlist available offline and nothing happened so instead I had to do it individually to each song within the playlist (which took forever and there's no way I'm going to do that for my entire library). The iPhone battery is notoriously bad and so I regularly put my iPhone on airplane mode to preserve its power but unfortunately that means I have limited access to my music library. Basically, I want old iTunes back (I also REFUSE to pay for iTunes Match when I've already paid for my music).

Are there any solutions?
