I understand that after upgrading your MacBook from Yosemite to El Capitan you can no longer use AirDrop. You mention pairing as if trying to do a Bluetooth pairing. Note although Bluetooth must be on for AirDrop, Bluetooth pairing is not part of it.
Please step through these articles for how to get it setup and hints if it's not working.
Use AirDrop to send content from your Mac - Apple Support
Share content with AirDrop from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
If you need more help please let us know the details.
Best regards.

I had the same problem and I solved it with doing the following:
- Turn off Bluetooth on your Mac
- Delete /Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist
- Turn Bluetooth back on
God luck.
