I cannot receive group chat iMessages, anyone know why?

So I recently changed the email on my Apple ID – not a whole new Apple ID, I just changed it to my current email – but after I did this, I stopped getting iMessages from a group chat I'm in with my friends, unless I was on my laptop. I couldn't work out why until I realized it most likely would have had to do with the changing of my email, and my friends still having my old one. I sent them a message, asking them to change my email address, hoping it would fix it, but unfortunately it has just made it worse, and now I'm not receiving any of the iMessages on neither my phone nor laptop. Can anyone possibly think of a reason why this is happening and how I could possibly fix it?
