Siri: I don't have a number to send a message

Asking Siri to send an iMessage to my wife, and says "I don't have a number for <wife's name>". The funny thing is, asking Siri to call my wife works fine, dials right away to the correct number. So the number exists and the relationship is set properly but simply won't send an iMessage. What gives?
