can I play content through my tv using cdmi port?
Can I connect my MBP to my tv using the hdmi port as a means to view content - i.e.Now tv?

Connecting your MBP using the HDMI port will allow the TV to act as external monitor which you can run as a separate space or mirroring your internal display.
This is setup in System Preferences > Displays.
You may have to use System Preferences > Sound to send sound to the TV (if you want it).
