Syncing app updates from iPad/iphone

I am currently having issues with syncing updated apps on my iPad and iPhone onto iTunes. I am using the most current iOS system on each device and the most current iTunes. I am using a USB cable connected to my MacBook Pro but not syncing of updates. I can apparently backup both devices to iCloud and the MacBook, the problem seems to be with iTunes alone.

Any suggestions or do I have to back up my apps on every device?

With iOS 9 apps won't copy back from a device (possibly due to a new developer function called 'app thinning'), you will need to redownload them directly on your Mac's iTunes (and/or the other device) - if you download the updates to your Mac's iTunes you should be able to sync them from there to your iPad and iPhone, so you only need to download the update once
