Upgrading to Mac OS 9.2.2 and Mac OS X 10.2.8

I have a PDQ PowerBook G3 300 MHz, original 8 GB HDD, 512 MB of RAM running Mac OS 8.6. It also has a PCMCIA Lucent Technologies Orinoco Silver Wi-Fi card (which I have no idea how to use it). I got this computer a couple of days ago. It came with a lot of good software on the hard drive such as Microsoft Office 2001. What I would like to know is when I upgrade to Mac OS 9, will the applications be removed? Also I have a burned copy of Mac OS 9.0 that I kept as a backup from my iMac G3. Will this be good or should I install a newer version of Mac OS 9? Also does Mac OS X support the Zip Drive module? Also what updates and drivers do I need for Mac OS 9.2.2 and OS X 10.2.8? Any help will be grateful including how to use the Wi-Fi card on Mac OS 8.6.

PowerBook, Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier, G3 @ 300 MHz, 512 MB RAM, 8 GB HDD
