I have the 3rd generation of iPod touch. It won't turn on.

I have the 3rd generation of iPod touch. It won't turn on. But usually when it doesnt turn on I just hold down the home button and then the power off button and it will eventually turn on. It did show the out of power icon so I plugged it in. I thought it was charging but actually it was just heating up. And now it won't turn on.
