how to get iphone photos to computer

iPhone 6 version 9.0.2 mac pro Yosemite 10.5.5

How do I download my iPhone pics to my computer desktop? Things have changed.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

Once you connect the phone to the computer using wireless connection or a cable - Photos opens on the Mac and offers to transfer your images

I forgot to say I didn't want them in iPhoto. I remembered I can use Preview to download to a file on my desktop.

On your Mac, quit with iPhoto or the Photos app if you don't want to copy your photos there. Then start Image Capture. Use Image Capture to copy the photos to where ever you want.
