Q: Cannot scan from Canon MP500 printer in El Capitan

Just installed El Capitan and no longer will my scanner function in my Canon MP500 printer work. OS X Yosemite wasn't compatible with Canon's MP Navigator webface but I could still scan by going beyond the Navigator webface directly to scanning. Now that doesn't work in El Capitan. I know this is an old printer but help! And when I open Image Capture it shows my iPhone but not my printer/scanner at all. By the way, I'm still able to print on the MP 500 from my computer so El Capitan & my printer are obviously getting along on that score.

Thanks for any help!

An addendum: It appears that my using the "Scan with Scanner Driver" option available in MP Navigator, I can still scan BUT the preview window no longer works so I cannot see what I am trying to scan and therefore cannot crop it. But, I can still click preview and have the document read, and then click scan and have it scanned. I am then given the option to save it where I wish.

This is better than nothing but it sure would be good to be able to see the previewed image! And this MP 500 printer with scanner does not show up in Image Capture.

    Thanks again.

I had the same problem. Scrawling the web to find a solution…

Just did this — and it works:

Take the Canon printer driver for the mp500 (MP500 CUPS-Druckertreiber Version. 10.51.2.0 (OS X 10.5/10.6/10.7) from the canon website, for the system available > lion. Install it, while doing this, el capitan will ask for another systemtool to install. Say "yes" and then the CUPS-Printerdriver ist installed.

    It works!
