Q: How do I show Bookmark Bar in Safari 9 / El Capitan?

I just upgraded to a new Macbook Air and El Capitan at the same time (starting fresh with this device not transferring bookmarks/folders etc over). Prior to this I loved having my frequently used sites in the Bookmark Bar at the top of Safari. With the new Macbook I haven't found an option anywhere to turn on bookmark bar, only favorites bar. Are these two things one and the same now?? I don't see how they can be because when I add a website to Bookmarks Bar it doesn't appear on the bar at all. Only things listed as favorites. And Favorites bar doesn't have the mini icons for each bookmark. Also when I click the grid icon in upper left I can see a list of sites under 'Favorites' and a list under 'Bookmark Bar' so if they are two separate entities why can't I show Bookmarks Bar at the top of my browser??

Not sure if this makes a difference, but I have safari turned off in iCloud preferences of this device - I don't want these bookmarks (that I am trying to add) to populate my other devices.

I am guessing I am missing an obvious step here, but I am baffled - I can't even find the answer on youtube or Google.

Can anyone help me turn on/show Bookmarks Bar???

Thank you in advance!

Bob

Safari menu > Bookmarks > Show Bookmarks

It will open a left panel with your bookmarks.

Thank you ckuan - your answer helped me get closer, but I am still not there yet.  I have been able to see the left hand panel with my bookmarks but that isn't what I was asking for. I really want the Bookmarks Bar at the top of my browser.

Your reply made me think about safari preferences, so I tried that and under the 'general tab' there was an section for 'Favorites show' and the options were Favorites and Bookmark Bar. I thought for sure that was it, but even when I select the Bookmarks Bar I still have only favorites bar at the top of my browser. This is frustrating.

I don't think I have seen bookmarks bar on the top at all. I only see at the top the favourite bar.

Try adding them to Favorites. The icons are gone.

I have this same exact question. I used to be able to have a Boookmarks Bar (not favorites) at the top of Safari. I used to love that too. It was way more functional because you could have whole drop down folders up there, not just single favorite webpages.  You could organize dozens of favorites in a logical, easily accessible manner. Sad if that functionality is gone.

On a techniclal note, when I try the Safari-> Preferences-> General-> Favorites Show, fix attempt, I don't even get the bookmarks option. I'm guessing that's because I got a new machine without any bookmarks, and Mr. Linscott was upgrading.

Psst, Apple, bring back Bookmarks Bar please.

I'm sure that'll do it guys.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

I had my bookmarks disappear and only the bonjour dropdown was in the favorites bar.

Opened the pane to show bookmarks on the left and just selected all of the bookmarks, dragged them into the favorites bar next to the bonjour dropdown and they are back.

    Hi Bob,

i hope you discovered the answer to your question, but if not, it's in the VIEW menu up top of safari, choose SHOW FAVORITES and they'll pop back up on the top row like you want.

    best,

Very easy fix to this problem!

While in Safari go to BOOKMARKS -> Edit Bookmarks

Create all of your folders and populate them with sites you frequent

Drag and drop the folders under your Favorites

Go to VIEW -> Show Favorites Bar

...voila! You will see your folders with drop-down capability. Functions just like a good old fashioned bookmarks bar.

    Hope this helps!

I had the same problem. If you go to Menu Bar>View>Show Favorites Bar, I believe it will solve your problem.

I used the Bookmarks Bar daily and now it's GONE! I have tried everything to get it back but it's missing.

It was always there. Never went away. Now I have to make several clicks to find it but it does not stay put at the top of the Safari Page.

Has anyone figured out how to get it back?

Whenever I update to a new program something important vanishes. I wish someone from Apple would explain why they would take away this very, very helpful option. Or at least explain how to get it back.

Greetings, user gd4me is correct. You can also go to Menu>View>Customize Toolbar and drag the Favorites Bar to your toolbar. This way you can easily toggle the Favorites Bar on and off anytime.
