Q: El Capitan Mail Crashes Instantly

Shortly installing El Capitan I tried to send an email to a group. It crashed. Since then every time I attempt open Mail it crashes instantly.

From my  crash report, there is one line that seems to tell the story but I can’t determine the solution:

Application Specific Information:

*** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: 'Encoding a malformed address (unbalanced quote or parenthesis), bad things may be about to happen.

"Vestry ,'

abort() called

terminating with uncaught exception of type NSException

——————————————————————

I have tried all of the suggested solutions that I have seen with no luck. Thank you for any help you can provide.  Here is the beginning of the crash report (it seems way too long to copy/paste it all -- unless that's not a problem):

Worked perfect for me. mail kept crashing due to "malformed address". This fixed it. However, Apple ought to have a simpler way to deal with the issue without having to delete / rebuild all email accounts.

Obviously this is not solved. I still get the same problem, a Mail crash with a syslog report:

May 18 09:46:10 Mymac Mail[72172]: Encoding a malformed address (unbalanced parenthesis), bad things may be about to happen.

While I am able to see which e-mail address is the source of the problem,  since I have hundreds of e-mails with the same address in three accounts with more than 20,000 mails, any solution that just  points to delete the problematic e-mails and rebuild the database, following a tricky and lengthy process, is completely useless.  Sorry for being harsh, but since the syslog shows quite well the source of the problem, and given that this thread is already a few months old, is completely unacceptable that Apple is not able to correct it, since this should be classified as a *major and prioritary fault*, with high business impact.  I am sure that Apple already received hundreds of automatic trace reports that identify quite well this issue. Once it is identified, it is quite easy to patch the Mail application and handle this error gently, discarding the mal formatted message, and avoid the full mail crash, even if the mal formatted message is a server fault. This took me already several hours of work and cost $$$$ due to the impossibility of using my main mail client. Unacceptable.

I  had the same thing after installing 10.11.5 last night..

    this just worked for me

Mail may unexpectedly quit when displaying a message that is malformed or damaged.

Mail may quit when you view an email message that is malformed or damaged, and it may continue to quit as long as the message remains selected. Resolve the issue by following these steps to delete the message:

    1. Open Mail and immediately hold the Shift key until Mail opens. This causes Mail to open without any message or mailbox selected.
    2. Hide the message viewer portion of the window by carefully dragging the thin separator bar between it and your list of messages. Keep dragging until Mail shows only the list of messages, not the message viewer. In this view, you can see messages only by double-clicking to open the message.
    3. Click the affected message once to select it without opening it. Then press Delete or choose Message > Move to > Trash.

I fixed the problem by changing the name of the group. If that doesn't work, delete the group then create a new group with a different name.

What I did to fix this was to go into my Library Folder  (Hold down the Option key while selecting 'Go' from the finder menu and selecting "Library') going into the Mail/V3/XXX account folder associated with the account (in my case it was my work Exchange account) and deleting the Outbox.mbox, and then going into Mailboxes (in the same V3 folder)  and delting Outbox.mbox there as well.

When Mail is restarted I get a blank message and a notice that I cannot send it and to choose an account. I cancel on that and close the blank messages I got and moved on.

This just started happening today with one person in particular, now to investigate just what's wrong with her emails...
