Every time I update it fails -- why?

i Have been having problems connecting my iPad with Apple TV via AirPlay . So I decided to update software. i have everything connected as instructed. But every time I update message says it has failed. I have tried restart twice already . Should I restore and try again? Any other suggestions. The strangest thing is that AirPlay connects to my mac book ok.... But not with the iPad ( which is also fully updated)
