sign in to iCloud with gmail apple id or @iCloud.com address?

Hi,

I am currently in the process of setting up a new iPhone 6s and getting ready to upgrade my 15 rmbp to el capitain.

I have a gmail address as my apple id and an iCloud.com address.

I have signed in to my gmail apple id for iTunes and also iCloud on both devices.

However last night system preferences on my mac displayed "internet accounts" with message ;

"@gmail.com this is not your primary iCloud account, only your primary account can be use iCloud for safari, documents, keychain and find my mac."

Does it make any difference if I use @gmail.com or @icloud.com to sign into my iCloud?

It doesn't matter which address you use to sign in with, they will both work.

However, are you sure they are the same account, have you signed into the same account twice, something seems to be amiss and a little investigation is likely useful.

I am pretty sure they are, how can i tell? Ive got some strange things going on, basically neglected everything for a year or two and now trying to get everything in line is proving difficult.

Also, I signed into iCloud on safari and clicked the photos app, photos then proceeded to upload pictures but I'm not sure where from? I think I'm baffling myself out of panic more than anything!

Ok so if I open Internet Accounts I have

iCloud account 1 - iCloud.com - currently used for iCloud

iCloud account 2 - gmail.com - inactive

if i delete iCloud account 2 it deletes both and signs out of iCloud when i put my password in the iCloud pane (iCloud.com address) it recreates both.

* I have tried again and iCloud account 2 has remained deleted

You can check which addresses are in use for which Apple ID's at My Apple ID
