Apple stopped the development of iPhoto. All future development will be for Photos. iPhoto is still working on Yosemite and El Capitan, but you cannot rely on it to be supported in the MacOS X versions to come.

Photos has been designed to make the most efficient use of the new system libraries in the new operating systems and is deeply integrated in the system. I adds support for iCloud Photo Library and syncing with mobile devices.

Have you already migrated your iPhoto Libraries to Photos, and is that working well?

If you have older iPhoto Libraries that still need migrating to Photos, I would keep iPhoto until you have checked them and are sure, you will not need iPhoto to edit your book projects or calendars or to repair your iPhoto library.

Not all items of an iPhoto Library will migrate losslessly to Photos,  see this link:   How Photos handles content and metadata from iPhoto and Aperture - Apple Support

You can delete the iPhoto application, if you will no longer use it, but don't delete the iPhoto library until you migrated it to Photos and have a Photos Library with all your photos.

Thank you for your response. I have nothing in iPhoto so I will delete it from my applications.
