Lightning Cables defective?

I use the Original Lightning Cables which came with the phone to charge my iPhone 5S.

However lately I have been randomly getting a message. “This cable or accessory is not

certified and may not work reliably”

Could the cable be defective? I am wondering if I should get a new cable

I am using IOS 9.0.2 however this error has been occurring long before I upgraded.

Could also be that there is some lint or debris inside the docking port that needs to be removed. You can use canned air to blow it out, or visit an Authorized Apple Service Provider or Apple Store next to your place and let them check it.

Thank you for your response.

I checked the Lightning port I while ago as you suggested and there was some lint accumulated inside the port

I gently removed the lint using a toothpick.

However since the message only came up intermittently it would take a while to know for sure

if the problem has been resolved.
