Q: Compass calibration GPS usage everytime unlock phone!

Hi!

Here is what I found: everytime I unlock my iPhone 6s with ios 9.0.2 the location icon ALWAYS comes up. I went over and over in location services section and The compass calibration icon is marked. This happens every time...  Is This normal? Is this necessary? Do I really need to calibrate the compass even when not using it? I'm sure uses battery for something that I don't need every single time...

Many thanks in advance for your help!

    Your not helping by saying there is nothing wrong. I would like to understand why the Geo tag would stay on for 1 or 2 or more hours at a time. And what that means for battery life if anything.

    So are they saying if the Geo tag is stuck on, it is not using the GPS necessarily? When I turn off my compass calibration, my location based alerts geo tag gets stuck on for periods of hours at a time. Still seems like there is an issue.

    How did Apple solve the problem?

    Thanks for this information. My concern is battery and if it is not impacting battery then I am not that concerned I guess. It is confusing that if I turn of compass calibration then location based alerts seems to get stuck on (Geo tag stuck in status bar) for hours. I don't always get the best GPS inside my house so that could be my it is stuck on while I am in my house.

    Other things I have noticed: App recommendations based on location will set off location based alerts; Inside the wallet's "i" button for a particular payment method (like Starbucks) having this payment method set to go off based on location will also set off location based alerts.

    Normally, you need location based alerts to have calendar or reminders using location. This is fine and normally the Geo tag has a dashed line. Still never have experienced the Geo tag being stuck on. My 6S didn't do it, but I did return this phone for the Plus.

    Yours is on all the time? Just seems odd, what is one to do except ignore it. Good to know others experience the same issue. I was talking with an iOS tech and he said it shouldn't be on all the time (meaning it actually doesn't go off) so I am just confused now. I have another call for after the holidays and will let you know what he/she says. They did a remote scan and said the hardware seemed okay, but it wasn't stuck on during the call (not that it matters).

    Hope everyone has a great and safe holiday.

    Apple Care replied me that is iOS design problem. They reported to related department and asked me to wait next update. At least, someone from Apple admitted this is a problem.

    I Have experienced this in 9.1 and 9.2 beta. Hope this fix is around the corner.

    Thanks for the information though! Appreciated.

    I have been working with Apple for over a week. It seems like they don't totally trust that I know how to use the phone. The engineers have suggested that I turn off location based alerts for 24 hours to confirm that this is the location service that is getting stuck. After 30 days of seeing it get stuck on (with a purple arrow next to location based alerts) one might trust that this is the issue; oh well.

    When I had the compass calibration on, this service went on each time the phone was unlocked and the location based alerts didn't seem to get stuck. Once I turned compass calibration off I started getting a stuck location based alerts arrow.

    Very disappointed with Apple. If I turn off compass calibration then location based alerts get stuck on and my battery does drain.

    @King of Pumpkins

    What was the final verdict from Apple with regards to this issue? Have they clearly admitted a design flaw or did they say the design is fine?

    @Lawrence Finch:

    You seem to be knowledgeable about the design and its purpose. Would you please share with the forum?

    It's been 2 months since the last post, so we need some context. Also, have you read all of the posts, and none of them have provided insight? For example, what color and shape arrow do you see? Most arrows on the location services screen mean that the function has used location services in the recent past. There is no indication that it is being used currently. If you have any app that implements a geofence (such as an alert when you get home) the location must be updated frequently, and the location services arrow will be on all the time. If Find my iPhone is enabled location services is used almost continuously. If it wasn't then Find my iPhone wouldn't work. Why it is Compass calibration specifically obvious, but it's probably because the map is oriented with respect to the compass direction.

    But I think the most important point is that it doesn't matter. Location services doesn't use significant energy from the battery, and it is a major feature of many of the built-in and 3rd party apps.

    Hi Lawrence,

    Sorry for ghosting.

    The context is the same: geolocation turning on on every device wakeup in iOS 9 and above, apparently due to compass calibration. While most of the participants on this thread seem to be wondering whether this is what really should happening, you seem to be convinced that this is by design. Which implies that you know something about the design. If so would you please share with us

    1. what "compass calibration" exactly means,
    2. why it needs to be calibrated every time iPhone wakes up.
    3. what purpose it serves.
    4. what exactly functionality will be broken/limited/amiss if "compass calibration" is permanently turned off.

    And yes, I've read all the comments in this thread.
