Q: El Capitan Killed My Scanner

I just upgraded to Mac OS 10.11 (El Capitan), and it promptly rendered a number of pieces of software (all non-Apple) useless.

One of them was the driver and interface for my Canon scanner. Canon (and it would appear, a number of companies) were caught flat-footed by the upgrade. Unfortunately, all I can do is wait for them to catch up.

In the meantime, I was looking for an alternative, and the scanner utility itself WILL scan using. I think, Mac's built-in ImageCapture.

However, even set to the highest settings - billions of colors at 600 dpi - it spits out really bad images - all pixelated and grainy. See here - http://www.randysrodeo.com/images/scan.png (large file...)

Any ideas? I am dead in the water....

The Image Capture app also works as scanner software.

If using the Preview program did result in a scan, but of very low quality, maybe the resolution of the scan should be increased?

    I scan at 300 DPI.

Thanks.  Good to know, but my preference is to use the Canon printer/scanner software now that i have it working again.

Similar tale of woe here ...

Canon Pixma MX 850 not working wth El Capitan - Canon now not supporting this model

Oddly enough, when I checked they site, they don't support Yosemite either (I've been running that with no problems ) which led me to download Mavericks drivers...

    Bingo!

    All back to normal

I'm guessing that Yosemite used the Mavericks drivers anyway as I don't recall having to do anything when I upgraded ( if that is the right word!).

Caveat: I only use the scanner for emailing/archiving invoices @ 300dpi B/W so can't vouch for the other functionalities.

.... further to my previous post and with my apologies, I didn't look closely enough at the scans which were poor. Also, another computer on the network didn't respond to the same treatment, so back to square one!

(MB Air + iMac + Canon Pixma mx850 over wifi)

    I went here http://www.ellert.se/twain-sane/

and downloaded and installed: 1) libusb.pkg 2) sane-backends.pkg and 3) TWAIN-SANE-Interface.pkg ... in that order because 3) requests the presence of the other two.

The MB Air worked properly and produced decent quality scans so back to normal.

The iMac came up with various messages re switching scanner on reloading drivers etc. However, by rebooting the printer and ejecting/reloading in Image Capture the iMac functioned as normal.

Returning to the MBAir a similar reboot sequence has been required. We have had issues with one or other machine hogging the scanner before, though these seem to have increased.

So, we are up and and if not running, staggering along and won't be rushing out to replace what is a perfectly functional printer/scanner just yet.

I faced the same problem today. I did manage to scan a document to PDF by going into my printer/scan settings. Later, I googled and found the latest driver at Canon for El Capitain. There is no need to delete existing software or drivers. Just download the latest driver. It works like it did before the El Captain update. Therefore, I'm surprised by some of the advice offered on this forum.  Always check for the latest drivers from the company. Buy a new product only if there are no up-dated drivers. Here is the URL:

Same problem here with a Canon MX350. No scan thru scan button on the Canon and the only program that works it's Image Capture but with very low resolution.

This used to be my go to utility for my cannon scanner until I upgraded.

I just got my Canon Lide 600f to work fine with my Mac Book Pro with El Capitan.  No need to delete or uninstall anything.  I first installed the driver file named msd_-mac-lide600f-12_13_3a-ej4 from http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/0100440801.html.  I then tried to install the Canon software from the original disk but this didn't get too far because the programs are all the old ones which do not install on modern Apples.  I then googled the latest Canocan Toolbox software, file named cstbosx5014ej4.dmg which is version 5, and found it on a Malaysian site (the US site gave a 404 error of file not found) from http://support-my.canon-asia.com/contents/MY/EN/0200000802.html.

This installed the Toolbox App just fine, and although the scanner buttons don't work, the button icons on the software display do work.  The only thing to note is that, when you click on one of the copy, photo or email icons, the dialogue box with the settings has the SCAN button at the bottom right in the same grey colour as the box, and with SCAN in faint white letters - it is not at all obvious, but the help screen (using the ? at top right) showed me that the Scan button is indeed there.  It worked like a charm.

    Thanks Doug,

Vuescan works like a dream with my MP980 and El Capitan. Now I can get back to scanning the 400+ old family photos for my family tree. Much appreciated.

What an arrogant, condescending and, above all else, cynical response. You, one of the most helpful and respected people gracing these pages, are expected to set a much higher example of conduct.

    Solved!

Just released new drivers compatible with OSX 10.11

    http://www.canon.ca/inetCA/en/serviceDetail/method/load/id/4/sid/26/mid/2201139/ type/D/opt/1

(don't forget to select "OSX v10.11" from the "OS" pulldown menu)

--had to install each a couple of times, but in the end, it worked.  The LIDE 220 is functioning as new in El Capitan.

I have the scanner (LIDE 210) working, but unfortunately the buttons still on the scanner are still not working.  Has anyone heard of a potential fix?  The newest drivers haven't corrected the issue.  I'm wondering if its even something they're interested in correcting.
