El Capitan Killed My Scanner

I just upgraded to Mac OS 10.11 (El Capitan), and it promptly rendered a number of pieces of software (all non-Apple) useless.

One of them was the driver and interface for my Canon scanner. Canon (and it would appear, a number of companies) were caught flat-footed by the upgrade. Unfortunately, all I can do is wait for them to catch up.

In the meantime, I was looking for an alternative, and the scanner utility itself WILL scan using. I think, Mac's built-in ImageCapture.

However, even set to the highest settings - billions of colors at 600 dpi - it spits out really bad images - all pixelated and grainy. See here - http://www.randysrodeo.com/images/scan.png (large file...)

Any ideas? I am dead in the water....

Get a new scanner with compatible drivers. Printer & scanner software available for download for your Mac.

Vuescan 9.5.27 will work if you select Color media and leave the input bits per pixel set at Auto. You can set the output bits per pixel to whatever you like, from 1-bit B&W to 64-bit RGBI. This is in Professional mode with Vuescan Pro. The company -- probably just one guy --- just changed their UI a few versions ago and the new UI is confusing. The user guide hasn't been updated as far as I can tell. When things are in a stable state Vuescan is an excellent program, but the guy is probably pulling his hair out after Win 10 and El Capitan hit at the same time.

"Get a new scanner with compatible drivers" is rude, useless, and uncalled for.

I had the same problem, using a Canon LIDE 210 scanner. What solved the problem in the end was to remove everything related to the scanner from my computer, including the MP Navigator software and all other Canon utilities that came with the scanner when I bought it. I then went to the Canon support site and downloaded everything (driver, MP Navigator and Quick Menu) anew.

The Quick Menu looks quite different now, but the scanner works again. The only thing that I didn't get to work is the buttons at the scanner so I have to start the scan by using the Quick Manu - not much of a problem for me...

There is one problem remaining though: Apparently the driver cannot be used to scan text and images without resetting something. The workaround is to start Image Capture and choose Reset TWAIN devices under the File menu. This is described in the FAQ on the Canon support site and seems to be an issue with the Canon driver. I hope, Canon will fix this in the future, so it may be worth to keep an eye on driver updates. Or, maybe Apple will provide something...

Following your suggestion. I was able to do an image scan. Having an issue with scanning a PDF, 90% of my use. Tried your suggestion of launching Image Capture and resetting Twain devices. Upon doing so. Image Capture saw my scanner. When pressing the scan button in the Canon software got a dialog box indicating that scanner was set to Image Scan do I want to use twain. Said yes and then scanner just hung. Still playing around.

Interesting note. Canons web site has El Capitan listed as an OS without any drivers or files associated with the OS. Had to use Yosemite drivers and software.

Randy, i have a CanoScan Lide 200 too. I just removed all Canon Software from my mac and run Image Capture. It just worked ok! Did some restart and Twain reset. But when Image Capture found my Lide Scan 200 it just worked. I also have Vuescan Trial version installed, don't know if this helped. Hope it woks for you and the rest! Fingers crossed....

New information.

Using the Preview program did result in a scan, but of very low quality.

How I was able to fix the problem and have the Canon driver work:

- In settings remove the printer/scanner

- Then add the printer scanner back to the list

This now works for me as well as it did before upgrading to El Capitain.

Hope it helps you too (Canon MX 892).
