Problems with Mail post El Capitan

I have just downloaded El Capitan and my mail has gone haywire. It sends mail from my work email address and people do not know it is me that has sent it so delete it as spam. I have tried all the old workarounds for Yosemite but none have solved the problem. No matter what I do the settings are all greyed out. Can anyone help?

I am using a late 2013 iMac 27 inch which is full up to date - sadly!!!!

If this is an iCloud account, see below.

Please sign out of iCloud in its preference pane. No data will be removed from the servers, and you can retrieve it by signing back in. That said, you should always have a current archiveof the data for safety's sake, even if you don't sign out.

Sign back in to iCloud and test Mail.

If you use iCloud Keychain, when you sign back in to iCloud follow one of the procedures described in this support article to set it up on an additional device.
