Oct 11, 2015 3:17 PM in response to NorthstarFrankby PAHU,The last driver that Canon released for the MX850 was for OS X 10.9. This driver should install and function on OS X 10.11 so here is a link to that driver.

Oct 31, 2015 8:55 AM in response to PAHUby freediverx01,The old driver was already installed. El Capitan removes the driver and renders the MX850 useless. Canon has abandoned the product and refuse to update their drier.

Nov 6, 2015 9:28 PM in response to PAHUby miranda-b,Hi there,
I am new to the mac os world. But have a new Mac Book pro running El Capitan.
I have got as far as downloading the driver, and finding the associated .pkg file to install, but when I double click on it, I get the message 'This software cannot be installed as it does not support the version of your current OS'. I am not quite sure how to get past this problem
Thanks
Miranda

Hi Miranda,
Not sure why you are getting this message. I just tried installing the MX850 driver that I have provided the link to above and it worked.
In case it is your Gatekeeper setting stopping the installation, hold down the Control button and then click on the MX850 driver installer. A pop-up window will appear. Click Open. Now a new window will appear asking if you want to open the MX850 installer. Click Open and now you should be able to install the driver.
If this does not work then please reply.

Nov 7, 2015 6:27 PM in response to miranda-bby freediverx01,I got it to work by downloading the MX850 v10.84 driver for OS X 10.9. Here is a link to that driver from Canon Australia

Nov 8, 2015 12:20 AM in response to miranda-bby PAHU,Hi Miranda,
I think there must be a setting on your Mac that is causing this message. I've tried a few things today but I have not been able to get the same message to stop this MX850 driver from installing on 10.11. So as a workaround you should try installing Gutenprint and then adding the printer using the MX850 Gutenprint driver.

Nov 8, 2015 1:33 AM in response to PAHUby miranda-b,Thanks for you help anyway, PaHu.
I am familiar with Gutenprint - all our PCs here 'til now run Linux and have done since it first appeared as a viable command line and later desktop option, I reckon a sys admin job awaits me Until recently, printing was always one of the big headaches on Linux systems often circumvented by Gutenprint drivers.
I will keep digging into this though; the challenge of getting an in depth knowledge of OS-X appeals.
Thanks again,
Miranda

This worked for me too, using the v10.84 driver for OS X 10.9. Thanks PAHU!
