Cannot Login to App Store on Macbook Pro

Hello,

I am on a 2011 Macbook Pro running 10.6.8. After getting slower and slower I decided it was time to upgrade the operating system.

When I open the App Store and tried to download the latest OS X nothing happened after clicking "Get".

I realized i probably needed to login so I tried to sign in through the top status bar but nothing happened.

I think tried to login through the "Purchased" tab in the app store. Again no pop ups and no way to do anything.

I installed the Mac OS X combo that was available and again no solution.

I am lost on what to do and why i cannot login.

Had you ever used the Mac App Store prior to this? Had you created an iTunes/Mac App Store account?

I have never used the App Store on the MacBook before but I do have an iPhone or work and have a username and password both for itunes and the app store. I have logged into iTunes on the macbook as well and ensured the computer was "authorized". When I click Sign in for the App Store nothing happens. No box pops up, nothing.
