I can't get files to go into my external hard drive

I'm trying to put audio files into my Segate Backup plus 1TB external drive but it won't allow me to. How do I fix this?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

Open Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities) and see if the drive is formatted as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled). If not, erase the drive and reformat it that way. If it is in that format already, what happens when you try to copy?

If your drive is formatted for use in Windows (NTFS), and If you do not want to format the drive to something OSx can use, then you will absolutely need an NTFS driver.

Paragon, or Tuxera are the most suggested ones.
