How do I create an Outline using Pages?

Pages 5.6.2 has a very complete "Outliner" but it is called "Harvard".

You choose it by;

Format (sidebar) -> Bullets & Lists (pull-down) -> (choose) Harvard.

Then within the Bullets & Lists choices you create the formatting style you prefer.

Pages v5.5.3 has no true outline capability. You can attempt to make an outline using the list functionality, but it will drive you mad. Here is an example (click image to enlarge) of the Outline facility in Mellel 3.4.3, which has a free trial, and is also in the OS X App Store. MS Word has had true outlining capability for eons.

The outline templates in Pages '09 v4.3 that were omitted in all releases of Pages v5. There are no explicit Outline tools in Pages '09, and there is an optional Toolbar item called Outline, that toggles between headings and text, and an improvised Outline view. If you still have Pages '09, this may be a minimum match for your outlining needs.

That is not an Outliner, that is a List Style.

Just before getting your response I'd found that I can add BULLETS & LISTS in Pages 5.5.3 by using the Text Format Inspector.

For simple outlining that may be good enough. I'll also check out your suggestion.

If the list controls serve your need, then fine. It is not a very smart list capability, and you may find yourself spending all of your time playing with indent and text offset values that do not line up properly.

When I want to create an "Outline" I want an autoformatted document summary, in hierarchical list format. A type of tree structure.

This capability is in Pages in the Bulleted & List formatting setup.

You are correct that this is not an Outliner. For thought organization I prefer a graphical Outliner such as "Inspiration".

For quick correct outline formatting "Pages" Harvard style is very capable.

I have the same problem. I thought Pages used to have an outline template.
