Is OS X El Capitan compatible with Office for Mac?
Is there a compatibility issue between the new OS X El Capitan and Office for Mac?

The Mac OS X version of Office 2008 and newer will run on El Capitan.

Certainly not with Office 2011. Works fine.2004 will not work and I have heard some are having issues with 2008.

Office 2016 For Mac is reported to occasionally crash but a fix is in the works. I use it and have had no issues so far.
The fix for office 2011 for Mac has already been implemented
YYou should be just fine with no issues
I am upgrading to el capitan and have an old version of Office for Mac. I just use excel. Can anyone recommend which office I should buy? I only need excel and want to spend as little money as possible. thanks!
Do you need Excel?
Do you use Macros?
Do you exchange workbooks with Windows?
Apple has a spreadsheet called Numbers. It is pretty cheap compared to Office. It doesn't have Macros like Excel and while you can import and export as Excel format, some things may not transfer as you'd expect.
There is also the Open Office, Libre Office, Neo Office suites which are free or low cost replacements for MS Office.
I just need Excel. All my business files are on there. And my accountant uses those. If I go with Office for mac, is it fine to buy an old version- like 2011? Or is it better to go with 2016? Are there versions in between?
I haven't used 2016 long enough, but it seems to better match the Windows versions in design, more so than it has in the past versions.
If I was going to have to spend money on a product, unless you can get a ridiculous deal on 2011, I'd go with 2016.
2011 still works on El Capitan, but support for it will likely fall off in the future. I don't know when Microsoft plans to End-of-Life it.
Office 2016 Home and Student is a one-time purchase option that includes Excel at about $150.

Thanks Barney.
How do you get Microsoft Office 2016? Actually how can I upgrade my 2011 version?
Just checked that on microsoft.com - they are treating 2016 as a separate product, no upgrade pricing, and you can keep running both in parallel if you want
For a few weeks I have been having continuous problems with my Office 365 apps on my Macbook running OS X ElCapitan 10.11.5. I use this for a living and all of my clients use Microsoft documents and spreadsheets. I can work for about 10 mins on Word or Excel before I have a crash. It is causing continuous disruptions. I've had to use 365 online to get around it, but it's slow and I have to keep replicating files if I don't want to use OneDrive.
Any ideas on a fix?
The installer for Office 2008 will NOT run on a Mac with El Capitan. I had an issue that caused me to wipe my drive and reinstall the system, and when I tried to install Office 2008 from the original DVD, I kept getting an error message. There's a long discussion on the Microsoft Mac support section that finally states this.
I had previously installed the Office package on the laptop, running Yosemite, and when I upgraded to El Cap it was fine. But trying to install on the El Cap system DOES NOT WORK, PERIOD.
It would be very nice if someone could fix this.
That would be up to Microsoft but being such an old version I don't like your Chances.
Pete
I guess I could de-install El Cap and re-install Yosemite, but I opted to buy Pages. I'll see if I can work with that.
I ported over to OS X El Capitan and my MS Excel exploded and I cannot get it to work at all. Are you sure that Excel 2011 works on El Capitan in 2016?
