I have a home WiFi network using my AirPort and some extenders which works quite well; however, I've tried to connect my desktop iMac to the AirPort via Ethernet, which will not work. Probably doing something basic wrong. I am running El Capitan. Sorry for the basic nature of the question but I don't really understand much of this. Any help appreciated.
iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)
The iMac will connect using Ethernet......IF......
The Ethernet port on the iMac is working
The Ethernet port on the AirPort router is working
The Ethernet cable is working
You have turned off WiFi on the iMac

The only thing I haven't checked is the Ethernet port on the iMac; I suppose if I unplug the cable from the modem to the router and then directly into my iMac it will answer that question. All the rest I've already done.
Rebooting the iMac solved the problem. I suspect there is something wrong with the ethernet port.
Or the operating system on your iMac.....if you have Mavericks or Yosemite installed on it.
