iPod classic won't eject.

This is the reason given – "The iPod cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application"

I have tried ejecting via iTunes and also the normal PC method without success. There are dfinitely no applications open

Close iTunes. Close any Windows Explorer windows. Try safely remove hardware again. If needs be shut down your computer. If it happens repeatedly it could be anti-virus software, adding an exclusion of the iPod's drive letter might help.

It will depend on your anti-virus package. It could be some other piece of software that is actively checking on attached devices, but AV is the first thing to check. And yes, if the worst comes to it you can always shut down the computer. What you're trying to avoid is disconnecting the device while Windows still has some data waiting to be written out to the drive. Safely-eject hardware should complete and pending transactions, but if it cannot for some reason a system shut down should force all processes to close gracefully.
