Q: Mail after El Capitan update gets stuck at downloading messages

After updating to El Capitan the Mail app on my Macbook Pro makes it run hot and gets stuck at "Downloading messages".

I use iCloud, not having any problems with accessing iCloud mail on my iPad, iPhone or Macbook 12inch.

Looking at the activity log this repeats:

Oct 12 17:45:25  Mail[10889] <Debug>: [xxx@me.com - Inbox] <Body Fetch> Recalculated priorities - network: 8, persistence: 0

Oct 12 17:45:25  Mail[10889] <Debug>: [xxx@me.com - Inbox] <Body Fetch> <IMAPSyncBodiesOperation:0x7fa57fb72930> 26 messages now running

Oct 12 17:45:25  Mail[10889] <Debug>: [xxx@me.com - Inbox] <Body Fetch> Operation finished: <IMAPSyncBodiesOperation:0x7fa57fb72930> 26 messages

Oct 12 17:45:25  Mail[10889] <Debug>: [xxx@me.com - Inbox] <Body Fetch> Recalculated priorities - network: 23, persistence: 0

Oct 12 17:45:25  Mail[10889] <Debug>: [xxx@me.com - Inbox] <Body Fetch> Network operation: <IMAPSyncBodiesOperation:0x7fa57c403b10> 26 messages, 1 bodies left to fetch

I have 6GB of activity logs with that stuff.

Not sure what to do here i have already tried adding and removing accounts, closing and opening Mail and restarting the computer.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013), OS X El Capitan (10.11), null

It seems this BUG is not fixed and it just happened to me last evening.

Mail App is downloading a numerous amount of emails (that don't exist!), they just appear in the activity window.

The logs are growing all the time, especially these 2 files:

    2016-03-30_IMAPSyncActivity.log

    2016-03-30_IMAPConnection-my_corporate_domain_here.com.log

The content, like in a loop with some values changing a bit:

As you can see these files are filling up quite quick - few lines of text each second....

THIS IS A HUGE ISSUE and none of the methods that were mentioned here or in similar threads didn't resolve my issues.

Apple Mail is trying to download a huge number of e-mails (that don't exist) and fill in my disk drive with these logs mentioned above.

This is a nightmare, and it seems it's making me more furious than Outlook loosing my e-mails :-/

Please share any ideas you have to solve this.

After spending hours on the phone with 2 senior Apple techs, the 2nd person solved the problem very simply by having me move the mail folder from the Library to the desktop and restarting. Apple mail then started normally and  repopulated my mail from the iCloud server automatically. For saved mail on my computer, I then manually imported the items from my desktop. Let's hope it continues to work.

Try turning your computer off - unplug the modem for about 10 minutes. l  This solved the problem for me

I have had this issue too twice in the past weeks. I am on the latest version of El Capitan.

The first time Mail completely seem to hang (spinning beach ball) and I couldn't start any other programs (because of CPU usage?). I rebooted my iMac using the power button.

Second time the same thing, but this time I waited a little longer and suddenly everything was OK again.

WARNING:  this is VERY uninformed and irresponsible advice:

From /Libary (you can find the master Library folder in the first list you get when you open your hard drive) delete:

    /Library/Caches

    /Library/InputMethods

    /Library/LaunchAgents

    /Library/LaunchDaemons

    /Library/StartupItems

    /Library/ScriptingAdditions

Especially if there are a great deal of 3rd party operating system component software in /library/launchagents and /library/launchdaemons.

If you have implemented this advice and study sops working after a restart.. Just restore them from a backup.
