TM will delete old backups as a regular thinning process. It happens no matter how much free space you have.. due to the hourly backups there is no need for it to keep everything.

It is best to just let TM do its thing.. if it runs out of space then it will tell you and start major deletion.. however that is now problematic if you have several upgrades to your OS stored in the TM backup.. it takes a lot of space and TM does not handle multiple OS at all well.

IF you are concerned.. archive the TC (or whatever the target is).. wipe it and start afresh.. that is btw the best way as then you have old backups intact.. and new backups which are 1000% more likely to work in a restore/recovery situation.
