El Capitan Won't Safe Mode

So, when it was on the installing process, it was stuck at 19 minutes. I waited 3 hours for it. I decided to shut it off by pressing the power button instead. When I turn it on, entered my password a weird message appeared on my upper right of the screen. I went into Recovery mode, yes, I can install a new OS X. The problem is, I have to delete some files the suggestions are to go on Safe Mode. It's been hours and I've tried all the possible "safe mode" options. Pressed the shift key, while the start-up sound was playing, after, and before.

I have 5 papers that are due this week, please help. D: THANK YOU!

if you have another mac you can by using target mode provided the two computers have matching FW400 or FW800 or Thunderbolt connectors, a spare cable or a FW to TB converter*

OS X El Capitan: Transfer files between two computers using target disk mode

What model mac(s) do you have and what year?

I have the same problem initiated when El Capitan just hung after a forced startup. I have tried recovery and Disk First Aid - showed no issues. I also cannot access permissions repair in El Capitan. I have reloaded El Capitan 3 times now (works for a while the just gets to a point where it just hangs after startup again) and now want to go back to Yosemite which I have on a usb drive but am finding that difficult. El Capitan will not allow me to load an older version of OSX. I have another mac but have to wait till I get a cable which will connect thunderbolt to firewire 800, or can I do that with an ethernet cable?
