Q: Messages app keep showing one unread message, but there's no more messages, how to make it go away?

Hi,

I'm new to Mac, so forgive my foolishness.

I'm using El Capitan for a couple of week now, and I've been more than happy using the Handoff feature between the iPhone and MacBook, kudos to the Mac engineers to make this "magic" happen. But the Messages app now keep showing one unread message even though I've already deleted all the messages, later I've found out (by double clicking the Messages app icon) that I can see what that unread message is, but how to delete it??

Is anybody experience this same bug? Do anyone find a way to remedy this annoying unread badge? But no, not through System Preferences> Notification> Messages setting, because that just turn-off the whole notification for Messages.

MacBook, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5), MacBook 12" with Retina Display

In Messages > File there's a Delete conversation option. Would that  do it?

I don't think so, it'll only delete the whole conversation but not the one that's hidden from plain sight.

    Hi,

Check this out, especially the part about Mute conversations.

Use Messages with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

If you can bring up the message on Messages app on the Mac, at top right there's a Details button. Click on that and you can stop notifications from that message.

    Cunnla,

I don't think you understand my question, I don't want to mute the message, I want to delete it but the message is not shown in the Messages app!

Not mute, not do not disturb, but delete the hidden message! Hidden, out of sight from eyes view! So if I open the Messages app, there's no message in there at all, but the Message's badge notification shows there's one message still unread.

    Hi,

If you click and hold the Messages icon does it show you the name of the Message ?

If so can you select it from the icon ?

If not then try the following:-

Open Activity Monitor in the Applications/Utilities folder.

Search the list for the Dock.

Highlight it and then use the X quit icon top left of the window.

    Confirm Force Quit.

Two things will happen the Dock will disappear and then reappear whilst in the Activity Monitor it appears at the top of the list as it Restarts.

If that does not work go to the System Preferences > General Pane

Change the number for the Recent Documents, Applications and servers to something higher (I have mine set on 20)

Despite there being no Recent List in the File Menu any more in Messages it does alter what can be accessible from the DOCK icon.

Can you open it from there now ?

    Hi Ralph,

Thanks for replying, sorry I didn't know you posted a reply because there's no email notification about it.

This really frustrating, I already set the preference to receive email notification whenever someone reply to my post, but there's no email notification so far. And I checked my spam inbox, there's no email from Apple.

I've already resolved my problem, after a reboot, Messages app was finally showing the correct messages.

    Thanks again for your concern.

    Ralph,

I have a little complaint about this Messages sync between the Mac and iPhone, could you help me out?

I've dismissed a SMS message on the Apple Watch, few minutes later I opened my Mac and it showed me that particular SMS. That just one message, sometimes there were 4-5 SMS which I had to dismiss on the Mac even though I've done that on the Watch.

Is this behaviour by default on the Mac?

    Hi,

That is the default action on all the devices.

The "Sync" as Apple calls it is only "Display on all devices".

The advantage  is that the Mac has lots more storage and you can elect to Save Chats as opposed to having them on display to "save" them like the iOS devices.

You have always had to clear chats on the iPhone or iPad separately from the Mac.

Okay thanks Ralph, I hope Apple will iron out this kink in the next OS update (both on Mac OS X and iOS).

    Hi,

    It is not a kink.

It is the way the app works.

If you would like it to be different then use this page http://www.apple.com/feedback/ichat.html
