HDMI cinema display doesn't work

Hello all,

I'm trying to get a 23" Cinema display miniDP to work on my HDMI port as a second monitor. I have two Cinema displays, the HDMI refuses to work. The thunderbolt works with either monitor, HDMI neither. Previous to this I was using two 22" Acer monitors with no problems (apple DVI to HDMI). Since the monitor uses a miniDP I am using a new adapter to HDMI. Assuming my adapter is good, is there a way to get the HDMI to recognize the Cinema display? I have reset PRAM. Detect display is a no-go too.

Mac mini, OS X El Capitan (10.11), 16 GB ram, 250 SSD
