Can I update this older iPad to a higher iOS? I'm now running iOS 5.1.1 and it says there's no updates available. The games I need for school all use iso7.0 or higher. Any help?

If you have an iPad 1 (no cameras) it can not be upgraded further. All other models can be upgraded to iOS 9.
To add to stedman1's comment, if you head over to https://selfsolve.apple.com/ you can put your serial number in and it'll tell you which iPad you have.
