iOS 4.3.5 error 9 when updating to 9.0.2

Dear Mac Experts,

I've been having issues updating my cousin's old iPad 2 WiFi (MC979ZP) from 4.3.5 to 9.0.2. I keep having Error 9 whether I use DFU or any other method. Apart from that, Apple has also stopped signing all versions of Firmware prior to 9.0.2, therefore any older firmware is unusable (Error 3194 without fix even using System32). I was also trying firmware 8.4.1 and older firmware.

By the way, I've tried many different original cables and many different computers, both Mac and Windows, including the garbage bin.

According to Apple's HQ, this could be an "Untested Issue with latest iTunes and iOS9 having a negative effect on very old versions of iOS being upgraded to iOS9".

I'm writing here to seek help from you, if there is any other solution to this issue, and also to hopefully notify Apple's Support on this issue and hope they will fix it on their next version of iTunes.

Warmest Regards,

Mak ********

This iPad2WiFi should be very able to have iOS) (although there are some features that will not be available).

And of course the older iOS are not signed anymore.

You should be able to upgrade (I have never seen such a jump in upgrading...).

"I was also trying firmware 8.4.1 and older firmware" Where did you get iOS8 and older?

Was the iPad jailbroken once? then you can not find help here.

Dear Lex,

Thank you so much for your prompt reply. As for the firmware, in desperate meassures, I got them as IPSW files by searching on Google. "Ipad 2 Wifi IPSW". My cousin's iPad is not jailbroken, she got the iPad when she was less than 10 years of age, and she still doesn't know much about computers even today. Even myself, I do not know how to jailbreak and do not have any interest in doing it.

I really hope Apple is able to see the issues here with older devices. Like you said (You've never seen such a jump in upgrading). That's due to my cousin doesn't know much about iPads and computers. She never knew about iTunes or software update (there are no On The Air updates on older iOS). She only realise and found out the problem with Apps like YouTube stop supporting her device.

Once again, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Any additional help or replies are greatly appreciated.

Dear Sberman,

Thank you very much for your reply. I've checked and disabled my security softwares. Tried on a few different computers and different cables and even computers without any security with firewall disabled. Same problem. I believe it's the problem with newer iTunes and iOS 9.

I really really hope Apple Support team will notice this. Anyway, this iPad is as original as it is. My cousin doesn't even know how to update App or use iTunes. That's why until today, she is stuck at version 4.3.5 and even the Apps couldn't be updated.

Ok, good idea to check the security software (Sberman).

As you still have issues with it: perhaps it will go better with a mac: if you can use a mac (of a friend perhaps or even better in the Apple shop) and you connect the iPad to that (it will ask if you trust that computer, answer yes) you may succeed to upgrade. I have no better idea at the moment.

Dear Lex,

Thank you very much again for your prompt reply.

I've checked and disabled security software. Same issue.

I've also brought it over to my friends who are Mac Experts using their Mac. Same issue.

I've been checking many forums. Many people are facing the same issue. I really hope Mac will notice this and fix their iTunes.

Try one thing again: "forced reset" of the iPad: press and hold both the Power button and the Home button at the same time, keep holding, when you see the white apple logo appear you can let go both. Now try again with cable and mac-iTunes (latest) without security software. If it still does not work, I come back on my earlier post and go to the Apple Shop (..or even better in the Apple shop...) and have them do it.

Dear All

I have the same problems.

My copany have 14 iPad 2 Wifi, 10 of them with iOS 4.3.5 and they cannot be upgrade with iTunes (tested with itunes 10/11/12).

It is not a security problems, because I use a free firewall/VirusTools laptop.

I also test the update on a MacBook, without success.

The 4 others iPad 2 have been previously updated (ios 6 or 7) and the upgrade to iOS 9.0.2 happened without problems.

I test it many times, and it's like the iPad restart once too often, which causes an error 9 in itunes.

Hope someone can find a solution.

Hi Thierry,

Unfortunately, there is no solution to this yet until Apple notices us. It's the problem with Apple Server recognizing iPads with iOS before iOS 5.0. Perhaps an updated iTunes will fix this problem, if they do notice us.

I've already checked most prominent forums and there are many people who are facing the same issue. Most iPad 2 came with iOS 4 and there were a lot of people who didn't know or didn't bother to update their iOS until most App stop working. In the past, we had to update our iOS using iTunes and there were not many that are familiar with iTunes. Moreover, there are also many people who are less technology literate, ie children or older adults. They were simply using iPad for YouTube and web surfing. People like my mum never update her iPad until it's absolutely necessary.

I understand how you feel =)

Hi Ray,

sorry situation...

it would be good enough when Apple can make a signed iOS5 or 6 available for these customers, or, as you say, an updated version of iTunes.

have a nice weekend,

Lex

I do have the same problem.

I bought iPad 2 about 3 or 4 years for my father-in-law. He brought the iPad in Korea and came back to US two weeks ago. He didn't have any computer so he couldn't update iOS 4.3.3. Now I have the same issue. Once, I failed to update to 9.0.2, there is no way I can force upgrade with lower version like iOS 5,6,7, 8. When I tried, the error message is different from the error message I got from the trial to iOS 9.0.2. As if it says, 'I know you tried to install iOS9, but you can't go lower version'.

Luckily, by using 'Reboot' software (also available for Mac and Windows), I can still use the iPad with iOS 4.3.3 But only Safari for web surfing.

'Reboot' cannot completely clear your failed attempt to iOS 9.0.2.Thus, you still can't upgrade to any version.

I hope Apple will find a solution before my farther-in-law goes back to Korea in December.

When I tried to install most of the versions like iOS 5,6,7,8, I already tried what you said. 'Shift' + 'Update' or 'Restore' for windows and 'Option' + 'Update' or 'Restore' for Mac. I tried both Windows and Mac. I even tried with older version of iTune on an old Windows machine. No success.

I'm sure people above must have already tried what I did.

Once you failed at iOS 9.0.2, then iPad remember your trial. So, there is no way to downgrade.

At this point, there is no solution in my opinion until Apple figures out maybe in iOS. 9.0.3 or iOS. 9.1.0.

I would like to keep my fingers crossed.
