Q: iOS 4.3.5 error 9 when updating to 9.0.2

Dear Mac Experts,

I've been having issues updating my cousin's old iPad 2 WiFi (MC979ZP) from 4.3.5 to 9.0.2. I keep having Error 9 whether I use DFU or any other method. Apart from that, Apple has also stopped signing all versions of Firmware prior to 9.0.2, therefore any older firmware is unusable (Error 3194 without fix even using System32). I was also trying firmware 8.4.1 and older firmware.

By the way, I've tried many different original cables and many different computers, both Mac and Windows, including the garbage bin.

According to Apple's HQ, this could be an "Untested Issue with latest iTunes and iOS9 having a negative effect on very old versions of iOS being upgraded to iOS9".

I'm writing here to seek help from you, if there is any other solution to this issue, and also to hopefully notify Apple's Support on this issue and hope they will fix it on their next version of iTunes.

Warmest Regards,

Mak ********

    Status update:

After I phoned the German Apple Care Team the 1st lvl support saw that the Apple Store had no solution. She had also no solution so the case went to the 2nd lvl support who gave me the option to send in the iPad for FREE! He said that I'm not the first one with this kind of problem. The iPad will be repaired, or I will get a new one, also for FREE.

Very good support from Apple here cause the iPad 2 is over 4 years old.

So my advice is to phone the Apple Care team and get to the 2nd lvl support (cause this kind of problem exists for all iPad iOS 4 user who want to upgrade to iOS 9.2) . Ask them for a free repair!

Good luck to all of you and best regards from Germany!

    Marc

You will have to let us know what happens. I find it hard to believe they will fix a 4 year old iPad for free and then if they can't they give you a new one. Not saying I don't believe you but I would say I don't believe them. I think they do know how to fix this issue though, they just want to make some money off of it. Good luck.

It is all true what I told you. I got the confirmation mails for repairing the iPad. Apple will send me packing materials for free to put in the iPad for sending in to the repairing service. Despite the iPad 2 is over 4 years old it has to get iOS 9 cause it is classified for iOS 9. So in my opinion it doesn't matter whether the iPad is still on iOS 4 or not. It is the fault from Apple which is not able to bring me the newest update to my iOS device. I told them, that I'm not able to use the latest apps due to a software (NOT hardware) issue from Apple and using the old iOS version is also a security problem.

Also: The 2nd lvl support never asked me for my credit card so there will be no potential payment in my opinion! They only asked me for my home address. And the 2nd lvl support confirmed that this repair is fully for free.

I advice you all to try phoning Apple Care and link to this thread.

I will post an update what happened during the repairing process.

I'm on the phone with them right now. Going to send it to them but it's not sounding like it's going to be free but she's talking to a supervisor seeing if I can get an exception. They better give me a freakin' exception since it's their issue. That rma or repair order# would be nice to refer to.

Tell them about this threat and that a lot of people with iOS 4 have this issue when the want to update to iOS 9. It is simply not possible! To update to iOS8 was possible but since iOS 9 came out and Apple stopped signing iOS8 it is NOT possible for iOS4 devices (especially iPad 2) to get to (currently) iOS 9.2 . Mail me to (EDIT: Mail address visible in reply notification mail from Apple with my sentence, I removed it here now) and I will give you the repair order number. I don't want to post it officially =( .

I just saw this in facebook this is not mine. Credits to the one who give this information

    Credit to Sir Bryle..
Warning if your on ios7 or lower Do not attempt to upgrade to ios9

    Gives you Error 9

Apple customer service advised iPad 2 users do not upgrade ...

reporter again consulting on this issue Apple's official customer service, a staff member suggested that reporters, the first upgrade to iOS 7 or iOS 8, and then upgrade to iOS9. But in fact, iPad 2 can upgrade to iOS 9, because iOS 7 and iOS8 already closed the verification, and finally said the staff advised reporters, just give the upgrade.

"Estimate is iOS 4 version is too low, no way to directly update to iOS 9." Huang Jianwei said, "If the user has upgraded to iOS8 before, then he will not upgrade iOS 9 obstacles."

the possibility of re-opening the Apple iOS 8 minimal verification, so the low version of the iPad 2 can not upgrade directly to iOS9, which leads to many domestic iPad 2 users will be unable to install some of the latest of the App application, user experience greatly reduced.

Shih said, "obviously the hard disk is not bad, said it was a hard drive failure, but also high-priced replacement, Apple's official approach is really puzzling." He said, looking forward to Apple's official give a more reasonable solution.

    Upgrade at your Own Risk..

Well, I was finally able to get a hold of a supervisor willing to help me, after 3 or four calls over a couple weeks and a few hours on the phone. In fact, I now have 2 iPads I'm not able to update. So this supervisor set me up with getting both iPads shipped for free to a repair depot. I just shipped them last night so we'll have to wait and see what comes out of it. As soon as I hear something I will let you all know.

I am another user who cannot update my iPad2 from 4.3.5 to 9.2.  I too got Error 9, thought I had lost everything but Dr Fone software managed to reboot and recover 4.3.5.  Was on the phone with Apple Care for a couple of hours last month about this but they were no help.  They suggested I ship the iPad to them and pay (!!) them for 'repairs' (there is nothing wrong with my iPad other than needing 9.2 for newer apps!).

I did as MelnikLa and brwyatt19 suggested and sent feedback (sorry for the shouts folks):

"Please, please, please fix the bug that makes it IMPOSSIBLE to upgrade an iPad2 from 4.3.5 to 9.2 !!!!  The problem IS NOT the iPAD2 hardware.  It is a bug in your iOS software update that needs to be fixed! There are MANY, MANY iPad2 owners with this SAME PROBLEM!!  Just take a look at your own support forum and see the 11 pages of frustration to date:  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7278630?start=0&tstart=0

No one should have to PAY Apple to have their iOS updated when Apple specifically said that an iPad2 can be upgraded to iOS 9.2.  Why, after months and months of complaints from iPad2 users, have you not yet fixed this problem??  I am so frustrated and disgusted with Apple's disregard of this problem that I am seriously considering ditching Apple products."

Would've written more but message space was limited.

Hope lots more of us complain to Apple to get this ridiculous situation fixed.
