Oct 12, 2015 8:40 AM in response to rturkby Old Toad,Actually they are not saved twice or taking up double the space. That's because the new Photos library uses hard links to the iPhoto library thus "piggy backing" on the same files that iPhoto uses. This two sites describe it in better detail:

That being said, make sure Photos will do everything you want it to do before you delete the iPhoto library or the iPhoto application. If you decide that you'd rather use iPhoto for a while longer you can if you have iPhoto 9.6.1. If you want info on how to get iPhoto 9.6.1 post back and I'll provide it.
A lot of users have obtained iPhoto 9.6.1 and continue to use iPhoto until it is no longer supported by the system. At that time they'll migrate to Photos which should have additional features.
