iCloud Drive Files missing

I have a critically important Numbers spreadsheet that I saved to iCloud Drive thinking this would be safer than saving it on my laptop or external hard drive. This morning I went to retrieve the spreadsheet and it is gone from iCloud Drive. I cannot find this file anywhere nor can I duplicate it. How can I retrieve this document?
