Q: Hi I just upgraded to El Capitan and Safari 9, and now the fan is works harder if I am browsing amazon.com.

I have noticed before that when I am on some websites the fan works harder. I was noticed that the new OS addresses some issues as it pertains to the efficient working of the machine. Please advise as to what additional resources are required to keep my machine a cooler running system. Do I need more RAM or should I replace the hard drive with an SSD? Would that help to keep the machine running a lot cooler?

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11), 13inch

    Do you notice the same thing when using other applications or is this only with Safari? Do you any extensions installed in Safari?

    Hello Kappy,

    Thanks for responding so soon, much appreciated. I mainly use safari, I always have the browser running even if I am working on a document. Safari gets more use than any other program and yes I do use Adamant, Adblock plus, Road block, and Traffic light extensions. I would also hear the fan working harder if I am using MainStage 3 or iMovie. But I expect the machine to be processing more when using my audio software or doing video editing, not while I am looking for stuff on amazon. I don't use all the plugins at once I am just trying them out to see which one I prefer, I hate the distraction of popups and advertising while I am browsing the internet.

    I would start by turning off Extensions in Safari. See what happens. You'd be surprised that two or more extensions may result in some unexpected interaction. If you have Flash installed then I suggest using the ClicktoPlugin extension to prevent the use of Flash when it isn't needed. Flash will cause the processor to work more when it is loaded.

     

    It's usually a good idea when troubleshooting something like this to return an application to its barest state without any add-ons. Then add them back one at a time until you find the one causing the problem.

    Ok thanks again. This is another one of these minor things I pick at I guess but will monitor the issue as you have suggested and will update this post when I get around to doing so. Thanks again.
