Q: My macbook pro crashes repeatedly

Hello, I've a macbook pro mid 2010 running yosimite (osx10.10.5) with two 4gb ram. For some reason it keeps crashing, restarting the computer automatically and then instantely crashing and restarting, this time allowing me to enter the computer.

it crashes usually when I open photobooth, or other apps similar such as iphoto. i've tried AHT (apple hardware test) but every time its about to start the test it crashes shutting down the computer immediately without restarting it. I've tried replacing the ram but this does not stop it crashing. I've ran out of all ideas. All help is welcome.

    You have the misfortune of having a model identifier 6.2 MBP that is probably having GPU problems. There was a logic board replacement program on these models but that has expired.

     

    To solve this problem, you can have the logic board replaced at your expense.

     

    As a temporary measure you can download and install this application:

     

    https://gfx.io/

     

    This will allow you to disengage the discrete GPU and run the MBP using only the integrated one. This will result in a degradation of graphic performance.

    The bad news is that my conjecture was correct.  The MBP has GPU problems as confirmed by the kernel panic report.  I have already listed your two alternatives.

    Thanks for replying. I recently replaced the graphics card and the processor in the computer. This has worked partially. The computer has stopped crashing regulary but does crash when i open a number of apps and keep using the computer.I still don't know what to do. have any ideas?

    If you have replaced the logic board, the kernel panic report indicates that the same problem exists on the replacement.  The same remedies still apply as mentioned in my initial response.

     

    If the replacement was performed by Apple, all repairs have 90 day warranties.  If someone else did the replacement, then their policies would apply.  If you did the installation, you might have recourse from the source where you purchased the replacement board.

    Thanks for your help. It's given me a lot to think about and I will definitely be trying to get a replacement logic board and hopefully it will solve the problem.
