So after upgrading my OS X Yosemite to El capitan, for some odd reason my keyboard backlight stopped working. While using the F5 and F6 command buttons shows the light changing, it doesn't actually turn it on.

I am having the exact same issue as above. SMC and PRAM both reset, still no dice. Would love to know if anyone found a solution to this.
same issue, reset SMC and PRAM still nothing. Went into apple genius bar today and the tech told me he doesn't know why it stopped working due to the upgrade and if iw anted they would change my keyboard ????? Anyone have a resolve for this? it happened as soon as i upgraded.
I had same issue. But I opened "About This Mac" and suddenly the backlight started working! Would you please check whether it can solve your problem too.

Anyway I was pulling my hair with my face on the keyboard trying to figure out the keys in the dark. I like to work in the dark at night. Call me a geek.

I too had no backlight and this is what I saw on screen when pushing the increase backlight key :
Resetting the SMC (twice or thrice) restored backlight.

All I did to fix this problem on my MacBook Air, 2015, was do a restart. Everything works fine now. Not sure what happened, but something tells me it has something to do with the battery. If the battery runs out of juice, it affects the backlighting feature on the keyboard? Not sure, but seems plausible.
Anyhow, hope this helps.
