How do i access my mail in iCloud and copy it to an external hard drive

I need to free up space and my mail of past years is in folders that i want to copy to an external hard drive. The .mbox business didn't work because i think the files are too big to move about. So i thought i might be able to copy directly from the infamous cloud. Any other suggestions?
