Since last Yosemite update MacBook Air (mid 2012) will not remain in sleep mode. Was hoping updating to El Capitan would correct the issue but it has not. Have tried all the suggestions I could find online except wiping the HD. Suggestions? more

Oct 12, 2015 8:31 PM in response to artsmart50by Linc Davis,Test after each of the following steps that you haven’t already tried:
Step 1
Take all the applicable steps suggested in this support article. That's the starting point for any further effort to solve the problem. Skipping any of those steps may mean that the problem won't be solved.
Note that, as stated in the article, the computer will not sleep if some sharing services are enabled. From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Sharing
Turn off all sharing services.
Step 2
If iTunes Music Sharing or Home Sharing is enabled, disable it or quit iTunes. Do the same with any third-party applications that have a similar feature.
Step 3
Select
 ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Accessibility ▹ Speakable Items: Off
Step 4
Select
 ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Bluetooth ▹ Advanced...
and uncheck both boxes marked
Open Bluetooth Setup Assistant at startup if...
Step 5
Step 6
Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
/var/vm
In the Finder, select
Go â–¹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You may not see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder named "vm" should open. Inside it, there may be a file named "sleepimage". Move that file, and only that one, to the Trash, but don't empty yet. You'll be prompted for your password. Close the folder window.
Restart the computer and empty the Trash.

Oct 13, 2015 9:40 AM in response to Linc Davisby artsmart50,Nope...followed everything you listed right down the line and it still will not stay asleep. There appears to be another issue as well, when I went to "restart" the Air did not restart and I had to use the power button to power on. I'm 50 miles, one way, to a genius bar and I'll probably have to leave it there so I'm looking at a minimum of 200 miles to try to get a repair. Am I at the point to have to do a clean install? Will that help? I have run a hardware test and diagnostics says everything is okay.

Oct 13, 2015 12:36 PM in response to artsmart50by Linc Davis,If you've really done all that, then you've ruled out everything I know of as the cause except a corrupt installation of OS X (unlikely) or a hardware fault. You can rule out the former by reinstalling, but I wouldn't expect any change. Otherwise, there may be an authorized service provider closer to you than an Apple Store.

Oct 13, 2015 1:46 PM in response to Linc Davisby artsmart50,I thought I might go through everything once again to make sure nothing was skipped and in the meantime look for an authorized shop locally. My son thinks its a trackpad issue but it happened immediately after updating to Yosemite 10.10.5 - coincidental?
Should I try a clean install of El Capitan (I created a bootable thumb drive prior to installing to use on my iMac)? I've backed up everything to my Time Capsule and will back up again to an external before wiping the HD. I do have a some old software (Adobe CS5 and Office 2008) that are currently working but suspect they will be useless if reinstalling from original disks.
Thank you for your help.

If you want to go that route, I suggest you first install on an external storage device as a test.

Oct 13, 2015 1:55 PM in response to artsmart50by henrik80,You could also try resetting SMC and/or NVRAM.

I'm not sure I understand how to do this.
I did find a local authorized repair shop - open two days a week for 3 hours each...next available appt is in a couple weeks.
@henrik80 - I've done the SMC and NVRAM but will do it again as I go through the check list.

Oct 13, 2015 4:58 PM in response to Linc Davisby artsmart50,Thank you.
I'm not sure if this has any bearing on my issue but when my power supply is not connected the Air will go to sleep and stay asleep until I wake it up.
