Since last Yosemite update MacBook Air (mid 2012) will not remain in sleep mode and the trackpad occasionally highlights text without my attempting to.  Was hoping updating to El Capitan would correct the issue but it has not.  Have tried all the suggestions I could find online except wiping the HD and doing a clean install. I ran a system check to see what was waking up the computer and it listed EHCI, however I have no bluetooth items connected or any USB peripherals plugged in.  Suggestions?

Again, no change.  I am beyond frustration now and think I only have two options - try reinstalling El Capitan and if that doesn't work, take it in for repair.  In all the years I've used computers - all the way back to a mainframe in 1970 - I've never had to take one in for repair, PC or Mac, but I'm far from being an expert and I am just stumped!

Thanks for all the suggestions, I've gone through them all three times and just cannot find the issue.

I think you have a faulty AC adapter.

We could rule out possible hardware failures by adding a new user to your system. See to System Preferences->Users & Groups and create a new user. You might have to unlock the feature before. Then log out current user and log in to newly created one. See if the problem still exists on that new account.

I thought this might possibly be an issue as well so did order a new one today from Apple.  Fingers crossed.  I spoke to the gentlemen that runs the local authorized shop and have an appt Monday to drop it off unless I can fix it before then, he is inclined to think it may be a software issue but won't know for sure until he gets his hands on it...sadly they are closed until Monday.

@ henrik80 - I did try a different user account, logged out of mine and into another...same problem

Well...I was hoping to report good news after doing a clean install of El Capitan on the MacBook Air but trying to erase my HD has failed.  Not sure why, will try to research that.

Figured out why my HD would not erase and got it done.  Did a clean reinstall of El Capitan and so far so good.  The Air will finally sleep and is no longer "wonky".  Just may do this to the iMac as well
