If you're referring to an iPad, use the device's Software Update function or update it from iTunes on a computer.

If you're referring to an iPod touch, it can't be updated past 5.1.1.

If you have 3rd generation iPad, connect to your computer iTunes and upgrade iOS 9.0.2 with your iPad selected from there.

Make sure you have the latest computer iTunes 12.3.

Download the current version of those applications to a computer or compatible iOS device, click here, and try following the instructions.

WhatsApp is a telephony application. It won't work on an iPod touch regardless of what iOS version is installed on it.

If your iPad do not have a camera then it's the 1st generation which you cannot update further then iOS 5.1.1
