Q: iPhone 5 does not show WiFi icon at top left when connected to WiFi

The Apple Support article on connecting an iPhone to WiFi states that the iPhone will show the WiFi "fan" icon at the top left of the screen (where cellular service status is also shown) when connected to WiFi. My iPhone 5 does not show the WiFi icon when connected to WiFi. True with iOS 8, and now also with iOS 9.0.2.

How do I get the phone to show WiFi connection status at the top of the screen? It's a bother to have to check in Settings.

iPhone 5, iOS 9.0.2

I have an iPhone 6s and I'm facing the same problem. When I enter the WIFI admin page from my mac it shows that my phone is connected, but the WIFI fan doesn't show up on the screen.

Turning off my phone and then turning it back on fixed it for me, at least for now. But as this has happened before, I don't know if it will occur again.

One thing to check: even if you have a WiFi connection, if you don't have an assigned IP address you won't get a WiFi "fan" logo. You can check this by clicking on the "i" in a circle to the right of the network name in the WiFi admin page (Settings app > WiFi).
