restore to new 6 plus but error message in email: can’t connect to server?

Got the new phone, put old sim card in and restored via mac laptop and all ok till I saw NO mail (yet box is full).
It says wifi connected in settings, 4 bars service, checked mail settings -ON, get safari on phone I can go get mail
there on web I can see but didn’t try to answer. Perhaps missed a step on set up?
