my computer said there was an iOS update so i initiated it. now all my documents, photos, spreadsheets, downloads, etc.. are all gone and i can't figure out why or where they all went.

I dont follow you iOS is for iPad or iPhone. Please explain exactly what you are speaking about it would be interesting to know. I do the upgrades all the time without even backing up my machine. Also exactly how did you carry out the upgrade, your answer will tell us why you lost your information.
OS not iOS. i went to the app icon lick on update for the OS, it told me that it would need close out of numbers to complete the update but it would reopen once the update was complete, it did not. my desktop picture changed, none of the folders i created on the desktop were there, everything was gone.

Still seems rather unusual. Do you use iCloud and did you enter your credentials when prompted to during the upgrade.
i did enter the iCloud info when asked but my iCloud storage is full. i don't really understand how iCloud works or this machine. it didn't do this during the last update
You may have logged in as a different user, such as Guest. Open the Users & Groups pane in System Preferences. Your name should be at the top of the user list, under Current User. See also this support article.
If you have information stored electronically, and I always tell people this, back it up, back it up and then back it up again. If you care about your data you need to make multiple copies. Electronics will fail, data will get corrupted or lost. You can replace electronics, if you loose a copy of your electronic data, its gone forever majority of the time, if there is a chance of recovery, recovery is expensive to the point that most people don't even bother. However Linc raised an excellent point and it would be nice to hear from you following up with his suggestion.
